Over the past 200 years, thousands of ships have docked at what is now known as Discovery Dock in London, bringing exotic and precious cargo from all over the world - sugar and spices from the West Indies, fruit and vegetable from the Canaries, exotic timber from Africa and South America, and wool and grain from Australia. London's dockyards are now being transformed and Discovery Dock, situated close to Canary Wharf, has been developed into two residential buildings, East and West. Discovery Dock East is home to almost 200 apartments and was completed in 2005, and Discovery Dock West is due for completion in spring 2006, offering over 150 further apartments.
There are vertical shafts incorporated into the structure of the buildings, rising from the ground floor level through to the roof.

At each level within the lobby areas and opening onto the shaft, a Colt Doorman Door Operator was installed which acts as an automatically opening ventilator (AOV) into the shaft. In total there are 76 Colt Doorman Door Operators linked into a central Colt OPV panel, complete with local smoke detectors, with a Colt Seefire Ventilator fitted at the head of each of the shafts.
In the event of a fire, the Colt OPV panel operates the Doorman Door Operator on the specific fire floor in conjunction with the roof mounted Colt Seefire Ventilator for that shaft allowing smoke to be extracted from the lobby areas.
