Wärtsilä Propulsion Netherlands B.V., Drunen
Wärtsilä is based in the south of the Netherlands, with over a century of experience in the design, production and delivery of marine propulsion systems. As long ago as 1882, small propellers were cast from iron for inland navigation in the Netherlands, and in the 1940s, the company started producing very large propellers for seagoing vessels. In addition to the factory in Drunen, which now designs and manufactures propellers from 1 meter to 12 meters in diameter, and from several hundred kilos up to 100 tonnes, Wärtsilä also has an assembly factory for transverse thrusters in Heerlen.
Wärtsilä had a problem with dust and smoke from their production process, and asked three manufacturers, including Colt, to design a system which solved this problem for them. Colt came up with a new system with Concords used for heating and ventilation, and mechanical air outlets with enormous capacity, and the unique feature is that the filters are cleaned automatically overnight. Wärtsilä chose the Colt solution, and Colt completed the entire project from designing the concept, building, installing and up to and including service.
