The move from Bracknell in Berkshire to Exeter in 2003 enabled the Met office to bring all their operations under one roof, so improving their effectiveness, and encouraging the development of innovative products and services. One of the criteria for the design of the building was to achieve BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) excellence, and many of the materials used are from sustainable sources.
There has been minimal use of non-renewable energy to service the heating, hot water, cooling, lighting, power and ventilation. The landscaping of the site aims to encourage flora and fauna.

The multi-million pound contract to build and maintain the new Met Office was awarded to Stratus - a consortium comprising Costain-Skanska and Global Solutions Limited.
Colt worked closely with the architect Broadway Malyan, and with Costain-Skanska in developing the Colt solarfin system to provide shading and meet with the aesthetic requirements. We also provided the structural steel supports for the shading system.
