EXISTING ALUMINIUM SMELTER   CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW
ALUMINIUM SMELTER 		  AIR SUPPLY
 
The existing ventilation openings at the aluminium smelter of Nordural Nordic Aluminium in Iceland no longer satis-fied current requirements.
At Nordural's request, Colt implemen-ted a solution. Keeping the need for additional constructional provision to a minimum, Colt replaced the ventilation openings in this building with gravity  ventilation units, type Colt Labyrinth.
This comprised 780 metres in total. 		  Afterwards, Colt was asked to also fit a gravity ventilation system to the new building, construction of which had already begun.
The Labyrinth fitted to the new building comprised approximately 1200 metres with a roof opening of 4.5 metres. 		  For the openings in the basement, Colt supplied 934 natural air supply grilles measuring 3 metres wide and 1.4 metres high.
These grilles meet extremely high standards. Tests resulted in the following technical data:
  • Windload: 2 KN/m˛
  • Life cycles: 30,000
  • Rain and wind test: 75 mm/hr with 13 m/s wind
