Colt Germany

SEW Eurodrive GmbH & Co. KG, Bruchsal, Germany

SEW Eurodrive is one of the world's leading companies for modular electronic drive units. The fascination with dynamic motion sequences is already evident in the building's façade and solar shading structure. Colt projected and installed an external, fully automatic solar shading system.

The training and development centre is an architecturally appealing ellipsoidal building measuring 200m in length and 40m in width. This extraordinary shape and the specification of a vertical louvre system which fitted around it gave the designers a challenge in terms of shading, weather protection and daylighting.

Colt's engineers did not want to take any risk with regards to structural engineering and noise outbreak, so thoroughly tested the equipment at the company's R&D centre in Kleve. They conducted several wind tunnel tests with up to gale-force air velocities. The results convinced the architects and the client to give the go-ahead.

Colt provided a vertical, extruded aluminium Solarfin louvre solar shading system covering over 9000m², faceted over the training and canteen building as an appealing, continuously rounded façade.

Floor to ceiling solar shading louvres were installed in the administration area. Doors and windows were also covered with homogenous louvre banks in order to make the general impression visually uniform.

The Colt solar shading system is remotely controlled by an ICS 4-Link central control unit but it is also possible to position the Solarfin louvres manually. Furthermore, in automatic mode the louvre position is altered with manual intervention depending on the weather and the sun's position.

The requirements with regards to the shading efficiency, ideal daylighting levels and comfort levels were completely met.
