Hamilton is a liberal arts college with an emphasis on individualised instruction and independent research, and is a national leader in teaching effective writing and persuasive speaking.

It was founded as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793, and chartered in 1812 as Hamilton College, the third oldest college established in New York State.
