Zurich Airport
When designing the new Airport in Zurich, the architect was looking for a solar shading solution which maximized natural daylight, but wanted to avoid the extensive use of glass over such a large area to avoid excessive heat gain within the building.
Having initially tested various special synthetic membranes developed by Colt, Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners specified controllable perforated Colt Shadometal louvres to cover the complete west façade of the A500 Airside Center. The control system adjusts the position of the louvres in response to changing climatic conditions and available daylight.
